In this project, we develop a virtual microscope system for users to learn how to interpret a microscopic image. An anatomical section is first scanned to form an electronic form of its image. Then, the image can be pre-processed and saved in our system. Users can bring up the image again, zoom and pan the image in anyway they like similar to the function of Google Map. Furthermore, users can make some annotations, insert hyperlinks, and make measurements in the image for learning or discussion purposes. These functions can be used by each individual user to customize the system to meet his personal needs. People can also form some forums for learning, research, and discussion purposes. Users can use the system anytime anywhere without any restriction and learn the anatomic knowledge more efficiently and effectively.

 

We have found that with this kind of the system, although the real traditional anatomic sections are still unavoidable, they can be reduced to a minimum to save some learning expenses. Furthermore, the cost of microscopes, space to store the microscopes, and the manpower to manage the space and equipment can also be reduced significantly.

 

We believe that this system can be commercialized to save some budgets and improve learning efficacy.
